We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Tuscaloosa is good to families on a budget. From free story times to movies to bowling to building, there are plenty of ways to keep your kids — and your checkbook — happy this summer.
That’s why we love to bring you our annual roundup of fun and FREE things to do with the kids in and around Tuscaloosa.

Free movies!

Free bowling!
This summer, your kids can bowl for free at Bama Lanes.
All you have to do is register your kids and you’ll get weekly coupons via email for two free games per child per day all summer long.
Free bowling for kids is available seven days a week until 8:00 p.m.
This free summer special runs from May 30 to Sept. 5.
Free story times!
The Tuscaloosa Public Library will have free children’s programming. There will be story times and reading dogs and gaming throughout the months of June and July. Just keep an eye on our calendar for the weekly listings.
Barnes & Noble hosts a free story time for children every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in its children’s department.
Free art programs!
Your children will have a chance to spend time with several different artists this summer at The Tuscaloosa Public Library. Here are the artists featured in this summer’s program, “One TPL, Many Artists.” Please check our calendar to find out which branch of the library they will be visiting.
*Amy LeePard, a book artist, binder, and letterpress printer in Northport, Alabama (June 8 at 5:30 p.m.)
*Linda Munoz, a stained glass artist with a love of mosaic art and fused glass (June 15 at 2:00 p.m.)
*Steve Davis, a metalsmith and the owner of Sunheart Metalworks (June 23 at 2:00 p.m.)
*Maurice Clabaugh, a woodturning artist and specializes in revitalizing discarded wood (June 28 at 2:00 p.m.)
*Kerry Kennedy makes pottery and is the owner of FireHorse Pottery (July 6 at 2:00 p.m.)
*Carol Timkovich, a spinner, weaver, and knitter of many different materials (July 13 at 2:00 p.m.)
Free outdoor fun!
Every Saturday in June and July, Fresh Air Family will host a Hike for Tikes at The Birmingham Botanical Gardens. This free family hike takes place from 10:00 a.m. to noon and features storytelling, nature walks and hands-on fun for kids.
Fresh Air Family hosts plenty of other free and reduced-cost outdoor adventures each month all over the state.
The Tuscaloosa County Park & Recreation Authority’s (PARA) Annette Shelby Park on 15th Street features free fountains for kids to run through during those hot summer days. There are rest rooms and plenty of big trees to picnic under.
Free museums!
Are you a member at the McWane Science Center?
If so, you’ll want to head to Birmingham with your membership cards on Saturday July 23rd.
It’s McWane’s seventh-annual Member Day! And that means lots of free fun!
As a way of saying thanks for your membership, area organizations have planned a special members-only day of free admission and fun activities throughout the city. Your valid membership card and photo ID admits those listed on your membership into these participating venues all day long, with special events and activities occurring throughout the day at each location.
Participating Organizations: Alabama Sports Hall of Fame, Barbers Vintage Motorsports Museum, Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Birmingham History Center, Birmingham Museum of Art, Birmingham Public Library, Birmingham Zoo, McWane Science Center, Sloss Furnaces National Landmark, Southern Museum of Flight, and Vulcan Park And Museum.
Free building!
Home Depot and Lowe’s have free building workshops for kids on Saturdays.
At Lowe’s Build & Grow Clinic, bring the kids into any Lowe’s store on Saturday mornings and build a FREE wooden project. Each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, a project themed patch, and a certification of merit upon completion of their project.
Kids Workshop at Home Depot is the first Saturday of each month. However, there will be a Father’s Day Special Workshop on June 18. Kids can make a special gift for dad!
Free trains!
Does your child love trains?
Then stop by the Northport Train Depot Model Railroad Exhibit on Saturday mornings between 9:00 a.m. and noon.
Take a free tour of the model trains and catch a glimpse of Thomas. There is a real-life train outside as well. Go to 25th Ave. in Northport, not far from downtown.
