Tusc Moms

My husband, Andrew, and I are starting a push for a school voucher program in Tuscaloosa and we need a catchy name. Any ideas?

The plan is pretty simple: The City school system took in $113,897,336 of our money for 2010 while serving a student body of 10,314. This divides to $11,043 per child. That's a bunch a money!

By comparison: TA's tuition and fees for 2011 average $8,867 (more if you include the mandatory iPad). The Capitol School $10,264. And ACA? The poor things are getting by on about $5,100. And I bet none of them demand the kids bring their own toilet paper. It seems to me that the public school would benefit from a little healthy competition.

So, all we parents need to do is to take some initiative and empower ourselves and we shall be rewarded with a diverse array of efficient, responsive schools (public and private) vying for our business. Imagine churches, entrepreneurs or just a group of friends starting their own unique kinder care options. Options no longer artificially kept out of the reach of the poor and middle class. Tuscaloosa will be the envy of the nation.

Sure its a big step and it will mean changes. But it'll be each of us making them for ourselves. This is a real chance to make the world a better place and we have nothing to fear but fear itself.

Anybody want to help?

i think this is a GREAT idea, after my husband and I watched the movie "waiting for superman" we were appalled to learn about how much waste is in the education system. Let me know what I can do to help
(this is Andrew writing) We don't have much of a plan yet. It'll need a petition at some point. We're hoping to get churches' endorsements. I'm an accountant so I can't devote too much time until after April 18. I guess the first step is to try and find more people who want school vouchers so we'll have some support. We're new here plus neither of us know much about facebook, although we're trying to learn.

This is a unique point in Tuscaloosa's modern history. The governor is from here and the legislature is temporarily out of the grips of AEA, who is likely to oppose us. We may just have a 2 year window to get this done.

Thanks Kristin.

ps: Brynne put Waiting for Superman on our Netflix queue.
